Haven't posted much recently. So, what's happening on the writing front?
I've been working on various ideas for Doctors. Several rejections, but a bit of promise on a couple of story ideas - one in particular that might go places. It's a bit off the wall, but not impossible.
I bounced a few radio ideas off my friendly independent radio producer. And she bounced them straight back at me (very nicely, though).
And I accidentally missed the deadline for Channel 4's "Coming Up" competition. Oh, well. Didn't really want to enter it anyway!
Best progress at the moment is on one of my TV series ideas, "Bloodline". My agent's happy with it and it's about to go out there. If you're a producer and it lands on your desk, give it a read.

New idea. New pile of *****.
You just can't tell, can you?
I spent an hour or so sitting in a coffee shop in Orpington on Sunday having dropped my eldest off at a party and having some time to kill before picking her up again.
It was quality time for me. Peace. Quiet. A large white Americano and a chocolate florentine.
And time to give some thought to the Coming Up competition (see previous post).
Sometimes ideas come. And sometimes they don't. But this time, I had a cracker of an idea. I won't go into the details here in case someone pinches it. But it was great. A good concept, and the more I thought about it the better it became. All sorts of developments and ideas accrued around it. I was on a roll.
Then, yesterday, I couldn't think of anything good to say about it. Every time I thought about it, I came up with reasons why the idea was crap, why Channel 4 would despise it, why there was nothing of any value in the entire project.
And now, this morning, I'm getting excited about it again.
I wish I could just tell, one way or the other. Is this crap or is it not?

Coming Up... Again
It's that time of year again.
Channel Four and iwc have just launched their annual screenwriting and direction competition designed to get new talent on the small screen.
This'll be my fourth year. As always, they insist that they will only contact you if your submission is succesful. This is a cruel trick. I'm still waiting to hear from last year. And the year before. And...
Anyway, they've changed things a bit this year. They still want stuff that's bold, strong, original, ambitious and witty (as if they'd ever ask for material that's meek, weak, derivative, safe and dull). And it has to be something that "pushes boundaries". And contemporary and cheap (OK, they say "can be shot on a limited budget" - cheap).
But this year they've dropped the requirements to be young and urban. Thank God for that!
They've also opened it up to anyone who hasn't had an original single, series or serial broadcast. In other words, it's not just for complete newbies anymore - all those thousands of us out there with one episode of Doctors under our belts are now eligible too.
I was secretly looking forward to dumping their info in the bin this year with a proud "I don't qualify any more!". But, with the change in rules, I suppose I'd better summon up some enthusiasm and see what comes to mind.

Turning Forty
I'm forty now.
Don't feel any different, though.
Did a rewrite of my submission for Coming Up over the weekend and got it in by the deadline. Phew!
Not much writing going to happen this week. I've got a party on Saturday and the lawn needs mowing, the house needs tidying, the food and drink needs buying, the balloons need blowing, etc etc.

"Coming Up"
Spent most of the day trying to come up with something bold and contemporary and youthful for Channel 4's "Coming Up" scheme.
Failed.
But I did come up with something that might work for Radio 4. So, not entirely wasted.
And I did decide that something I worked on before might usefully be resurrected for Coming Up. In fact, I think it might suit rather well. Deadline's 18 April, so I've got a bit of time to polish it up.
